Who Me?

Me is not a word I seem to use a lot.  Maybe it's because on my list or priorities, "me" is at the bottom of it.  And I know I'm not the only one with a similar looking list.  As women's professions moved outside the home, they never let go of the role as homemaker.  So, our list grew longer as we added jobs to it.  With all the responsibilities we are trying to juggle, we often feel guilty about taking times for ourselves.  Psychiatrist Dr. Gail Saltz said "There is some maternal ideal of being self-sacrificing that just isn’t consistent with having time for yourself."  

A few years back, I read this quote from Gwyneth Paltrow and it really resonated with me.  She said "Taking care of yourself is being there for your kids, like how on a plane, they tell you to put on your oxygen mask first."  Since then, I really tried to make a little more effort to take care of myself and carve our "me" time.  Of course, it's still a struggle and I by no means have it all figured out.  But, I'm making an effort, which is progress.  

Here are some of my favorite ways to splurge on myself:

1.  Triathlon Training

No brainer that it's #1 on my list.  Not only is it something I enjoy doing, but the physical activity helps relieve stress and provide a nice endorphin boost to help power me through the day.


2.  Baths.  

Until recently, I rarely took baths.  Much like yoga, the stillness was maddening!  Yes, I know, "HELLO, Type A!" But, when I ramped up my tri training to prepare for Ironman 70.3 Texas, I started having little niggles in my hips and knees.  My friend Maggie recommended doing a bath with Epsom salt.  Since I was ready to turn to voodoo medicine to heal me up before my race, I figured, why not?  And, it turned out I actually enjoyed it.  I found it surprisingly relaxing and a nice little break in my evening where I could shut the door and unplug from reality.  For 10-15 minutes, I'm not a wife or a mother. I am me and only me


3.  Skincare

Because I increased my training (i.e sweating up a storm!), my time spent in front of the mirror decreased and BOY did my skin pay for it.  My skin looked so lifeless.  I decided to put a little more effort in my skin, because, after all, it is our body's largest organ!  I learned about DermaSport Skincare and thought I'd give it a try.  I'm always nervous of the commitment of a multi-step skincare routine, as I am TOTALLY uninterested in spending gobs of time getting ready in the morning and before bed.  But, these 4 steps are super fast and makes taking care of my skin a breeze!

A couple of other favorites in my skincare routine are: Rodan & Fields Microdermabrasion Paste and GlamGlow SuperMud Clearing Treatment.  I used these two bad boys to help keep my skin super soft and my pores unclogged.  The microdermabrasion scrub only takes 1-2 minutes and makes such a HUGE difference in my skin.  It feels super soft and smooth afterwards.  The mud mask takes about 20 minutes, so being the ridiculous multi-tasker that I am, I have been known to wear it during dinner time or while doing laundry or dishes!  


I know it's easier said than done when it comes to making yourself a priority, but I promise you that investing even 10 minutes of "me" time a day will pay dividends everywhere else in your life when you're a more engaged worker, parent and partner.
